European Blueberry growers unite to provide year-round offer for Asian markets

Growers from Spain, Portugal, Croatia and Poland launched their new cooperative at this year’s Asia Fruit Logistica in Hong Kong. European Berry Growers are working together to provide year-round deliveries of blueberries to Asia.

European Berry Growers consist of Frutas Naturales from the Huelva region in Spain, Acegrow based in the Interior North region of Portugal, DAR BLUE from Croatia and Polish Berry Cooperative. All farms in the cooperative are GlobalGAP certified. “We have many years of experience in selling to Asian markets, but by working together we can be even more successful here” – said Sergio Sanchez, Export Sales Manager at Frutas Naturales. “Our cooperation is based on high standards, ensuring that our clients always receive the best quality fruit”.

“The Polish season is too short for Asian clients. This is why we decided to work together with growers from Spain, which starts its season in January, and Portugal, where picking starts in May. Together with our farms in Croatia and Poland, and due to cooperation with farmers from the RSA, we are able to offer blueberry fruit year-round,” Dominika Kozarzewska of the Polish Berry Cooperative said.

The total area of EBG’s soft fruit farms is over 1400 hectares. “Six state-of-the-art packhouses allow us to pack the fruit according to the requirements of the most demanding clients” emphasized Rui Silva, Business Development Manager of Acegrow. “We believe that a consolidation of growers is the best possible answer to the challenges we are now facing, including growing competition on the blueberry market.”
