Spain: Highs and lows in red fruit volumes and prices this campaign

"It has been a very unusual campaign," says the manager of Cooperativa Agrícola de Bonares, Bonafru, Diego Barriga. But in the end, it has turned out fine, which is what truly counts for the members of the cooperative chaired by Manuel Limón. In general terms, the turnover has grown by 10% and sales have increased this year. 5,900 tons of fresh red fruits have been sold, and to this we must add the volume that has gone to the processing industry.

Diego Barriga points out that there have been many ups and downs in the ten months of the campaign (from September to June), both in terms of volume and prices.

Barriga explains that strawberries have achieved the best results throughout the season, making them the most profitable fruit, despite the oscillations caused by the weather. "The campaign has been poor in terms of volume, but good in terms of prices, so the balance has been satisfactory for the producers," says the manager. In any case, this is a general estimate, because "some producers have suffered the impact of the weather to a greater extent and they cannot make a positive balance; others have had more luck."

The raspberry campaign has also been irregular; the first part was marked by fruit scarcity; then, in the final part, production increased very quickly and then it came to an abrupt end. The central part of the campaign, between the months of January and May, has been the most regular. Barriga says that, in general terms, the levels reached in the raspberry season have remained normal compared to previous years.

Regarding blueberries, the production started quite late compared to what is usually normal for Bonafru partners, mostly due to the weather conditions. The campaign has developed with peaks in the production and, in the final stretch, there has been a clash with the productions of other countries, which has led to a decline in prices. In general terms, Diego Barriga points out that the levels reached have remained similar to those of previous years.
