"China: "The competition in the export market is quite fierce”"

“This year’s harvest season in Fujian province will start on August 20, however the provinces near Fujian, such as Guangdong, Hainan and Guangxi have already started their harvest season. The weather this season was very favorable for farming pomelos, which highly benefited the productivity of this season`s Pomelo. This season the output increased by 10% compared to last year,” said Henry Wang from Jiutai Modern Agricultural Co.,Ltd during an interview with Freshplaza.

Henry Wang explained how the pomelo market in China is divided and how this fruit is expanding its market share to other countries: “In the provinces Hainan and Guangxi the red pomelo is most popular and in Guangdong they farm both red and white pomelo. In Fujian there are four varieties of pomelos, most of them are white pomelo, but some are red. We mainly export our Fujian pomelo to European countries, Canada and Southeast Asian countries. In these countries the pomelo is not well known, but we have seen that gradually more and more people like to eat pomelo, especially the younger generations. A reason for this could be that pomelo is a very healthy fruit, it contains a lot of vitamin C. Furthermore, it has a very nice sweet and juicy taste.”

When talking about the competition in this market Henry Wang said: “The competition on the export market is quite harsh, you can see this in the competitive prices companies are setting now to win some market share. Though, we try to distinguish ourselves from other companies by maintaining a high quality product and good service for our customers.”

Jiutai Modern Agricultural Co., Ltd is operating in different countries. Henry Wang noticed that: “Our company exports directly to foreign supermarkets, like Carrefour and Auchan. Furthermore, we also own a DC warehouse in Poland, which we use to enter the wholesale market over there. Our company also purchases pomelo from Hainan and Guangxi province to sell these on the Chinese market. Even though Vietnam and Thailand also produce pomelo, it cannot compete with the quality of the pomelos from Fujian. We hope to share our pomelo with more people over the world and introduce them to the sweet taste of our fruit.”
