Potato harvest in Thüringen estimated to be 50 per cent smaller

The potato harvest in the German state of Thüringen will also be affected by continuing dry weather this year. The producer’s association THÜKAV fears for a harvest as much as 50 per cent smaller compared to an average harvest. There are fewer and smaller potatoes than normally. Moreover, a lot of potatoes are misshapen due to the often hard soils.

MDR Thüringen reports that many potato production companies in the state don’t yet fear for a catastrophic year. Because harvests were also lost in large production areas in Niedersachsen and Bayern, this could lead to higher prices on the market. The association estimates that one kilo of German potatoes will be about one euro more expensive in supermarkets.
