Pitahaya (Dragon Fruit) grown in the Dominican Republic

“The international market for pitahaya is growing. Asia and South America are increasing the production hectares to satisfy the growing worldwide demand. That's why the Dominican Republic has started to produce the red and white pitahaya”, says producer and exporter Cesar Perez from the Dominican Republic.

He explains that private sectors are producing pitahaya in different areas of the Island. “In the North, productions are located in Moca, Santiago, and Puerto Plata. In the South pitahayas are produced in Barahona, Pedernales, Bahoruco and Independencia. In the eastern part of the Island production areas are in La Romana, Dajabon, San Pedro, and Higuey. As a country, the intention is to have over 250 hectares by June 2019 and increasing from there.”

The Dominican Republic benefits from good logistics in terms of daily flights to the USA, France, Italy, Colombia, Canada, Panama, Mexico, Russia, Germany, Belgium, Spain, The Netherlands, and Puerto Rico. “Because of these frequent flights, we can work with good competitive airfreight fares. Thus, we are able to get the fruit to countries in different parts of the world. Important to mention is that the pitahaya will be certified Global Gap, in order to get to all markets worldwide as customers request.”
