New late bicolor apricot varieties

From 16 to 18 July, a new variety of late bicolor red apricot will be presented in the experimental fields of PSB Producción Vegetal in Valence, France. The open doors days will also serve to showcase other earlier and later varieties in the Red Buffalo range of red apricots.

The Aristo is a late apricot, harvested between 12 and 15 July in France. The harvesting period is a very important quality of this variety, since it is a time when the apricot market comes out of a period of saturation, just after the Bergeron, and at that time, there is usually a shortage of quality production,"explains Vincenzo Cerbone, of the Research and Development department at PSB.

According to the expert, "it is a self-fertile variety with very high productivity. It holds up very well on the tree and during handling, as well as in storage. Its large calibre is, on average, an AA."

"What stands out the most about this variety is its colour. It is mostly red, which gives it an attractive appearance, and its flavour is sweet and juicy," he adds.

Another important aspect for the areas producing late apricots is the flowering. "The Aristo has a very late flowering period, which allows it to prevent the threat of frosts during the most critical period. We believe that the Aristo will become a staple variety for that growing period in the coming years," affirms Vincenzo Cerbone.

Following the Aristo, and next in the Red Buffalo range of late apricots, visitors will be able to see the Milord variety, a very safe apricot for the producer.

"It is a self-fertile variety, very tasty and productive, with a large size, a red blush and adapted to most apricot production areas in Italy and the rest of Europe."
