Tunisian tomato exports increase due to geothermal greenhouses

Tunisia is not one of the first countries that comes to mind when you think about the use of geothermal energy. Due to low enthalpy resources, the use of geothermal energy in Tunisia is quite low.

However, recently geothermal resources have started to be used more prominently in agricultural production, especially in the El Hamma area, where the production comes from 128 hectares and the production numbers increased by 9,700 tons compared in 2018 to 14,000 tons.

A Tunisian/Dutch joint venture has been growing a specific variety of tomatoes in high-tech glass greenhouses in the same area since 2016. These tomatoes are exported to European countries and contribute to the national economy of the country.
