Warm weather brought early start for Greek cherries

The unusually warmer weather in Greece for this time of year has meant that small quantities of Early Lory, Early Bg and limited amounts of Burla cherries are already available. Although sizes are still a bit smaller with mixed colours, which is typical for the start of the season, there are a few orchards with 26+ sizes.

"Demand for these early varieties comes mainly from the domestic market and some Balkan countries like Romania and Bulgaria. Due to the delicate nature of the early varieties, there are limited supplies suited for export at this point. However, we do have some good suppliers that have small quantities of big sizes available and we expect more volumes and bigger sizes of the Burla variety from the 15th of May onwards," assured Aris Kalantzopoulos from Ariston Trade.

The main varieties in an order based on harvesting date are as follows: Early Lory, Early Bg, Satin, Samba, Larian, , Early Star, Grey Star, Black Star, Big Star, Lapins, Ferovia, Skenna, Regina, Kordia and finally, Sweet Heart.

"We trade almost all varieties but we focus on quality varieties that can travel without problems. Our main markets are Europe and Middle East with some sporadic air shipments to Asian countries," continued Aris.

"Concerning packaging, we prefer and recommend the 2,5 and 5 kg box, both with preservation bags, to our customers. We insist that they use thermo-blankets and we take care of pre-cooling, transportation, the selection of the right flights and the time schedules for delivery at destination. We have 7 years of experience in air shipments and we cooperate closely with one of the biggest air freight forwarders, DB Schenker Hellas."

The company also loads trucks and containers for European destinations, as well as Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Egypt from the end of May through to the middle of August.

"We are proud as a company, to announce that we have developed a very close and successful cooperation with two very big international brands, in the fresh fruit and vegetable sector. This will greatly expand our product portfolio with high quality and well known products. We have also added our Greek brands to the portfolios of our partner international companies. This means a lot to us because this will enable easier access for Greek products to global markets. Our next goal is to strengthen this new partnership, with the possibility of becoming their partners for Greece."

In addition to cherries, Ariston Trade specialises in apples, kiwis, strawberries and apricots and offers a variety of other fruits and vegetables.
