Jiuquan government establishes over 2,000 hectares of greenhouses

China: Hydroponic soil-free farming in the Gobi Desert

Jiuquan is famous for its dry climate and the barren landscapes of the Gobi Desert. In order to support Jiuquan farmers, the local government proposed special measures such as the construction of greenhouses with hydroponic soil-free farming systems. In soil-free hydroponic greenhouses, soil and fertilizers are replaced by plants and animal waste from local sources. Local farmers use micro-irrigation technology to save water. More than 2,000 hectares of greenhouses will have been established in the area by the end of this March.
