Consumers can now squeeze juice from an apple on the spot at Deen IJburg in Amsterdam from today. "Deen is the very first supermarket in the world where you can tap fresh apple juice from the apple without additives and without processing. On one side there is a crate of apples, a few seconds later you have a bottle of freshly pressed apple juice," says Menno Jonker of Thompe. The company recently brought the apple press onto the market.
Sweeter and more satisfying
"This apple press at Deen IJburg is the first in the world to be tested by consumers. It's much sweeter than orange juice, which is now also freshly pressed in the supermarkets, so children in particular love it. Fresh apple juice is also more satisfying and filling, like drinking an apple," says Menno.
Elstar
Tests show that the Elstar is the most suitable for making fresh apple juice. "Elstar has a fresh sweet flavour. It's a hard apple that has a lot of juice and less flesh. Jonagold is less suitable as the flesh is more crumbly. Price wise Elstar is also very attractive. You could even go for B quality apples that aren't suitable as hand apples but can be pressed."

Locations
Of course, the supermarket is a great place for an apple press, but Menno thinks the press is also suitable for multiple locations. "In theme parks, at schools, in hospitals, everywhere there are a lot of people. I can imagine a grower buying an apple press and putting it in a location like this. Besides this press for bottles, we also have a to-go variation for cups of apple juice. It operates as a stand-alone and has a store of 50 kilos of chilled apples. Anywhere you can put a soda machine you can put an apple press," concludes Menno.
