Pook Coconut Chips, a crunchy coconut snack from Thailand, won the innovation award at Fruit Logistica in Berlin. The product does not contain oil or fat and is available in three different flavours: Original Sea Salt, Mango Sea Salt and Chocolate Sea Salt.

Kanokporn Holtsch, founder and director of PookSpaFoods GmbH, accepted the award
Adora marmande-type tomatoes developed by the Spanish division of seed company HM Clause won the second prize. They are a variation of traditional marmande tomatoes with a unique texture and very early ripening. The flavour is well-balanced and sweet.

The product has an excellent shelf-life and nutritional properties thanks to its high lycopene content. Grown in Almeria by 50 producers, it is available in Italy as well.

A German paper company that developed a packaging solution made up of 50% natural fibre, completely recyclable and biodegradable, won the third prize.

Using vegetable fibres (in this case obtained by dehydrated grass) could help reduce energy costs and water consumption. While the traditional paste used to make paper requires 30 thousand litres of water and 6 thousand kW/h of energy per ton, vegetable paper only requires 150 kW/h and no water.

These are just a few examples of the innovations presented at Fruit Logistica 2018: 39 new products were launched on a global level and 22 on a European level. These include anti-microbial packaging from Turkey, top-quality basil from Israel, real-time data loggers from the US, French drones for spray distribution on banana plantations, a Dutch automatic pineapple peeler and a new marketing strategy from Rwanda.
