Peru consolidates as the world's fifth biggest exporter of grapes

According to statistics from 2016, Peru has established itself as the fifth world exporter of grapes after having conquered 40 international markets, stated the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri).

Peru also ranked third worldwide in productivity per hectare for grapes, with 21,498 Kg / ha, according to information collected by the Directorate of Economic Studies and Agrarian Information of Minagri.

Peru surpassed China, the United States, Italy, Spain, and France, which were ranked as the top 5 largest producers in the world, according to FAO data for 2014.

The high productivity of the Peruvian grapes exceeded the world average yield, which in 2014 was 10,457Kg / ha.

However, regarding the harvest area, Peru ranked 30th, behind several neighboring countries such as Argentina (226,388 hectares), Chile (198,028 hectares) and Brazil (78,765 hectares).

The extraordinary weather conditions of the north and south coast of the country have allowed Peru to increase the fruit's yields.

In 2016 the countries with the largest area harvested were Spain (931,065 hectares), China (770,101 hectares) and France (757,948 hectares).

Worldwide exports of fresh grapes grew by 8% in the 2012-2016 period, as they went from 4,053,900 to 4,411,300 tons.

During that time, Chile ranked first among the exporting countries, even though their exports suffered a 12.9% contraction in that period of time.

The same thing happened to the exports from Italy and the United States, which ranked second and third.

Meanwhile, South Africa, Peru, and China had boom in sales in the international market and became the fourth, fifth, and sixth largest exporters of grapes, experiencing increases of 14.0%, 91.4% and 109.2%, respectively.
