Meanwhile, domestic demand stays strong

Chinese dragon fruit grower targets export market

"A few years ago, Mr. Wang Jindu introduced the Jindu No. 1 red dragon fruits from Taiwan for the first time at our fields in Dongle County, Hainan. We planted this breed on a large scale between 2011 and 2015. In 2015, we started to bring batches onto the market. In the past two years, the Jindu No. 1 has become very popular, because of its unique taste, sweetness and sweet smell. Therefore, the supply does not meet the demand. The current price is 20% to 30% higher than last year," according to Mr. Liu Xinyuan of the Hainan Rouming Red Dragon Fruit Co., Ltd.

"Because of the limited production environment, the production area of Jindu No. 1 in China is limited to Hainan, Guangdong and Guangxi. Hainan is the only region that can make up for the lack of light in the off season, and is therefore the only region that can supply year round."

"The usual production takes place between May and December. The fruit blossoms for approximately 35 to 45 days. Every fruit weighs between 250 and 400 gram, and has a sweetness between 16 and 20. The off season is from January until April. The fruits then blossom 55 to 60 days, they weigh between 500 gram and 1,5 kilogram, and have a sweetness between 22 and 26. In the winter, because of the weak sunlight and the cold, the fruit takes longer to grow. Therefore, they become bigger, fuller and juicier."

"Our company is located in Dongle County, Hainan. We have over 100 hectares (1,000 mu) of fields with Jindu No. 1. We handle the fruit's production, promotion and sales. Our main sales region is now Shandong, where we sell 60% to 70% to large supermarkets, and 30% to 40% to distributors. In order to be able to better understand the demand and activity on the foreign markets, we will be attending Fruit Logistica in Berlin, Germany, in February next year. We are hoping to find exporting opportunities there."
