Landgard, Germany's leading produce and plants marketing organisation, is making an important contribution to fighting food waste with its "IssSo" campaign. Consumers, supermarkets and the Collaborating Centre of Sustainable Consumption and Production in Wuppertal agreed: Landgard's "IssSo" concept is one of the three most sustainable products in Germany in 2017.
The German Sustainability Award Foundation announced the winners in the presence of 1,200 guests, representing business, politics, science and civil society at the award ceremony "Germany's greenest gala” on 8 December 2017.
Landgard’s sustainability strategy is based on sustainable products, climate, energy and environment as well as on employees and society and the organisation submitted, for the first time, two of its sustainable concepts for the competition "IssSo" and "Maya the Bee". Under the label “IssSo” Landgard sells regional fruit, such as apples and pears, some organic, which have been damaged. Despite external blemishes, the fruit is still tasty, fresh and crisp. Landgard aims to reduce food waste and designs informative packaging about this important topic. “The REWE group is an important strategic partner, with great commitment to our products and they stand for a sustainable corporate policy as an international retailer. Concepts such as IssSo can only be developed in cooperation with partners such as REWE. The development and implementation of IssSo was a personal concern of mine,” states Labinot Elshani Landgard Chief Representative for Fruit & Vegetables.
Flowering plants labelled with the well-known television animation figure "Maya the Bee", Landgard teaches young consumers about to the importance of providing support for useful insects. So certain crop protection products are avoided during the entire cultivation period. Furthermore, Landgard as a responsible market leader with its sustainability strategy continues to develop sustainable products, concepts and a comprehensive approach.
The German Sustainability Award
The German Sustainability Award is a national award for outstanding sustainability achievements in business, society and science. With five different award categories, over 800 applicants and 2,000 guests attending, the event is the largest of its kind in Europe. And this year the German Sustainability Award celebrated its tenth anniversary.
The awards are presented by the German Sustainability Award Association in cooperation with the German Federal Government, local and business associations as well as numerous NGOs and research institutions. The award ceremony took place during the German Sustainability Day in Düsseldorf, which is the most visited annual congress on sustainable development. Manufacturers of food and non-food products can submit their concepts and products for the German Sustainability Award. The submissions are evaluated on several important aspects of production, from the materials used to energy efficiency and packaging as well as the sustainability performance of the company. Consumers have the final say in the product award category as they can cast their vote for the winner.
