Germany: Edeka wants to take over fruit juice producer Albi

The largest German food retailer, Edeka, wants to take over fruit juice manufacturer Albi, based in Berghülen near Ulm.

The Bundeskartellamt made this known last Monday. Previously, the Heilbronner Stimme reported on this. Albi occupies seventh place in Germany with about 93 million bottlings, according to this newspaper. The juice manufacturer delivers to the entire German food trade, and has its own brands for discounters. Edeka did not want to comment, referring to the fact that things were still ongoing.

The paper quotes a spokesman saying that Edeka already owns a juice producer in the Rostock area, with its own plantations and a fruit pressing plant in Poland. The aim of such investments is always to reduce dependence on external suppliers. The Edeka cooperative association also includes, for example, meat producers, bakeries and a winery.
