Chile: Finishing touches to the official launch of the first imports of Chinese pears

Feng Chunguang, a Specialist Consultant of the China Entry & Exit Biosecurity Society (CBS), and Gavin Fan, VP of Great Wall, met yesterday morning with the highest representatives of ASOEX to learn about the latest details on the actions to launch the first imports of Chinese pears in Chile, which has been organized by ASOEX.

The meeting was held at ASOEX offices, where the visitors were received by Ronald Bown, the President of the entity, and by Miguel Canala-Echeverria, its General Manager, Ignacio Caballero, the Deputy Manager of Marketing, and Paulina Escudero, an agronomist engineer.

"We believe that supporting this promotion pilot of the first import of Chinese pears to Chile is a positive thing. It's part of the commercial reciprocity that exists between both countries, and that we as ASOEX, together with the Agricultural and Livestock Service, support. These Chinese pears will complement the Chilean offer of this fruit because they are new varieties that may be appreciated by Chilean consumers," said Bown.

He added that, besides being consumed in Chile, the pears could also be eaten in neighboring countries of Latin America, as "Chile has always been a very good fruit distribution bridge to neighboring countries. For example, the Ecuadorian banana arrives in Chile and we distribute it to other countries, such as Argentina."

Three Chinese pear varieties will be offered in Chile. The first one is the Crown Pear, which is very light green, juicy, smooth, and that has a sugar content of about 13%. The second variety is the Hosui Pear, which has a round shape, orange skin color, a great caliber, as it can weigh up to 300 grams, and a 15% quantity of soluble acids. The third variety is the Ya Pear, which is yellow, soft, juicy, weights 200 to 300 grams per fruit, and has a sugar content of about 10%.

The official launch of this first import is scheduled for Friday, December 15, at 11:00 am at the Jumbo supermarket in Bilbao.
