Bad harvest leads to price increases in apple drinks

Germany: “Last supplies have already been processed”

The lousy apple harvest this year is still resonating in the food retail sector. Discounter Aldi significantly increased the prices of apple drinks such as juices and spritzers on December 1st: a direct result of the shortage of domestic goods. The competing supermarket chains will soon lag behind, according to experts. Cider makers and wineries all over Germany have no more cider apples on hand.

The Schorle of the Wernicke winery is currently available in very limited quantities

One liter of apple juice currently costs 79 instead of 59 eurocents in the lowest price range, an increase of one third. An even bigger rise of 53 percent was seen in the prices of apple juice. A 1.5 liter bottle in the lowest price range now costs 75 instead of 49 cents. A liter of apple juice at Aldi Nord leapt up with just over 16 percent, from 85 to 99 cents.
'Unique'
Mathias Wernicke, manager of the eponymous fruit juice GmbH & Co.KG, is by no means surprised by these price increases. In its own cider mill, the last supplies of local apples were processed last Friday. He had to up the prices of his products accordingly. “We had to increase the prices as well, depending on the product: be it apple spritzer or juice. It is a total increase of about 20 percent compared to the previous year's prices. By the way, the situation with our pears is hardly any better.”

In some places in Germany and the Lipperland region, there are still domestic supplies, but in limited quantities. Wernicke is also convinced that today's situation is unique. “I have not experienced anything like this before, that’s for sure. The prices will surely increase even more towards Christmas. And the big chains like Rewe and Edeka will follow.”

Even in the organic sector the situation is far from good, according to Wolfgang Diekmann of MoMa Manufaktur. With his mobile press he presses the fruits of the organic farmers in his region, and he has already ended his season. “We have had a terrible season. Cider apples cost between 0,25 and 0,35 euros per kilo. That's about four times the normal price.”
