“Short European season for yellow pitahaya exports”

“November and December are the months that the yellow pitahaya is exported to Europe. It’s only a short period where we export about 5.000-7.000 kg per week. It’s only a small market for exotic fruits. We offer the international market a new alternative with this pitahaya variety. The red variety is better known, but the yellow has some advantages. In general the sizes are bigger, the quality is better and the fruits have a longer shelf life, starts Bayron Ortiz from Organpit, Ecuador.

Recently the United States has opened for exports of yellow pitahayas from Ecuador. “Opening this market has been important for us. The market has just opened, and already we export up to 5.000 kg per week. Still, Hong Kong is our most important export market as volumes reach about 10.000 kg per week year round. The Asian market is very familiar with this fruit, that’s why we are very exciting about opening the Chinese market. We expect this to happen in January.”

Bayron concludes: “Our farm has existed for 20 years, however, we keep improving and increasing our production. When China opens for export, we need to be ready.”
