Italy: Big attendance at FuturPera

Many operators took part in FuturPera in Ferrara. The venue was divided into three distinct sections: commercialisation, technical means and mechanisation.

The inauguration

There was a big turnout on the first day and exhibitors were rather pleased. The stand of Vivai F.lli Zanzi, for example, was always full with both acquired and potential clients.

Sergio Molesini's innovation attracted quite a lot of attention among the many others presented at the fair. His daughter Benedetta gave him the idea to create a grader holder that speeds up sorting operations. "A couple of years ago, I was helping during harvesting and carrying graders like a necklace was slowing me down, so we developed this tool," she explained.

Calibryfruit (patented) is a grader holder that can be attached to crates or bins. This way, operators can sort pears quickly.

Tests showed harvesting times are reduced by 15% and there are fewer grading mistakes.

Translusia's team

As regards logistics, Massimo Ferrarese from Translusia stressed that being well organised is no longer enough, as facilities to be able to provide services are also very important. "We specialise in fresh produce with 180 vehicles, 6 platforms in the north-east of Italy and 5,200 pallets handled in a day. Our clients require all connected services as well as our availability, especially in the busier periods such as the upcoming Christmas holidays."

FuturPera president Stefano Calderoni added: "the event is important for both Italian and global pear cultivation. The first day has already exceeded expectations not only due to the people who attended, but also because the event moves related economic activities for almost €1 million. FuturPera must continue to do what it does to make our pears reach tables all over the world."

On 17th November, the second convention of the World Pear Forum took place. It was titled "Mercato e consumi: i nuovi trend e le sfide future" and it was the perfect occasion to analyse pear market perspectives and export frontiers. In the afternoon, other conventions held by exhibitor companies took place dedicated to pear nutrition, sustainable production, brown marmorated stink bug containment and production costs.
