Robin Bartels, Tozer Seeds:

“We’d like to take mini parsnips out of the organic environment”

Some years ago, Tozer Seeds introduced de Kalettes, then called Flower Sprouts, on the market. “You can now see the market gradually warming up to this cross between sprouts and kale,” Robin Bartels said during the Fruit Attraction. In the Netherlands, Kalettes are marketed by Van Nature and Van Oers United. “Kalettes are difficult to grow in Spain, but we see much potential regarding sales. We hope the product will turn out to be like kale, which became very trendy in recent years.”

“The sales season will once again start from the Netherlands within a few weeks. The area has expanded a bit again, compared to last year. Our Dutch licence holders sell the Kalettes primarily in the Benelux, Germany and Scandinavia. Besides, they’re very popular in the US, although they are difficult to grow there. So there are options for export from the Netherlands to America. On the other hand, the cultivation in Australia is going very well,” Robin said.

Another novelty promoted by Tozer Seeds during the Fruit Attraction, was the Javelin variety as a miniature parsnip. “We can grow these by sowing as many as 800,000 seeds per hectare. The parsnip is also becoming increasingly popular in the Netherlands. The product is often offered as a truly organic product here, but we would like to also sell it conventionally to supermarkets,” Robin concluded.
