Mexico: Mango growers target the US, Japan, Korea, and Europe

Local mango producers are aiming to gain market share in the United States, Japan, South Korea and some European countries with the help of new technology to export this nutritious fruit that is beneficial to health.

The application of a new technology based on electron baths, manages to prolong the ideal state of the fruit for several weeks, allowing producers to send it to other countries with the confidence that it will not lose its quality.

Mexico produces mango in Guerrero, and in other entities; the most prominent municipalities in production are Tecpan de Galeana, La Union de Isidoro Montes de Oca, Atoyac de Alvarez, Cuajinicuilapa, and Zihuatanejo de Azueta.

The most traded mango varieties are the Ataulfo and Manila varieties, as Guerrero is the main entity in the production and marketing of this juicy and pulpy fruit.

The municipal president of Tecpan de Galeana, Leopoldo Soberanis Hernandez, said he was confident they would achieve more income, as they have already begun exporting this fruit to the United States, Japan, South Korea and some European countries, which will increase mango producer profits by 40 percent.

He also said that he had met with businessmen interested in the importation of the mango from Tecpan in the state of Texas in the United States, and that the industrialists had also expressed interest in other fruits, such as lemon, chicozapote, and papaya.

He also stated that his government would promote a series of supports for the producers of these fruits so that they can begin large scale cultivation in the municipality and to start gaining ground in the distribution of these products to generate employment sources.

Initially, producers will start shipping mango and coconut to the international markets. In the short term they will send the other fruits that the entrepreneurs are interested in, as well as meat products of regional origin.

Mango is rich in provitamins A and C, as well as magnesium, and it has high concentrations of carbohydrates, which gives it a high caloric value.

The mango also has Iron, Calcium, Potassium, Iodine, Zinc, Magnesium, Sodium, Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B9, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin K and Phosphorus.
