Spain: There aren't enough watermelons and melons to meet demand

The increase in temperatures in week 21, from May 22 to 28, has triggered watermelon and melon orders to the point that there is not enough production to meet demand.

The sector, which expected to achieve very low prices this season, was very surprised as the heat of the past week tilted the supply and demand balance; a situation that has come to be described as "crazy" by agents in charge of the sale. As a result, prices have skyrocketed, both for farmers and for the fruit that is already packaged and is ready for export. Processed watermelon has gone from 35-40 euro cents to 60-70 cents, and even more in some cases. In turn, the price of the packaged Galia melon has gone from nearly 50 euro cents to more than 1.10 euro per kilo.

The rest of the horticultural products produced in greenhouses are showing an irregular behavior, mainly because the agricultural campaign is about to end. Most orders from European markets are moving towards other production places.
