Shuman Produce Purchases Vidalia onion operation

Shuman Produce has purchased the Plantation Sweets Vidalia onion operation in Cobbtown, Georgia. The purchase includes 620 acres of property, which houses a 94,000 square foot packing facility sold at auction on April 26. As a year-round grower and shipper of RealSweet® brand sweet onions, Shuman Produce is blessed and proud to have this opportunity to expand its operation.

“We view this acquisition as a good fit for Shuman Produce and a way to expand our Vidalia® onion land base and infrastructure. This will enable us to continue serving our retailers with best in class customer service and a high quality product under the RealSweet® brand,” said John Shuman, President of Shuman Produce.

With this acquisition, Shuman Produce will continue its strategic expansion by increasing its storage and packing capabilities, as well as adding more land into crop production. This facility and the included resources will also be an integral part of growth in the production of other Georgia commodities. Shuman Produce plans to begin using the cold storage space on the property in the coming weeks for this year’s Vidalia onion crop.
