China: Banana prices fall off a cliff

Currently bananas on the Chinese market come mainly from Guangxi autonomous region, Hainan province and Yunnan province. However, their harvest seasons vary: Hainan bananas come to the market before October, followed by Guangxi bananas, and Yunan's in December.

This year marked a low price position for bananas. This is because the banana plantation area increased a lot and the market is saturated. At this stage Hainan bananas have nearly ended, while Yunan bananas are fresh on the market, and Guangxi bananas are swamping the market. Due to huge market supply, the banana price continues to drop. Another factor that impacts the banana price is that more imported bananas from the Philippines and South America have come to the market.
