The impact of El Niño in Ecuador will cause a 10-15% drop in the pineapple production in the first half of 2017, mostly as a result of the difficulties encountered in the planting during 2016. Despite this decrease, there will be constant availability during the rest of the year. "We always have fruit available every week of the year; the volumes can vary slightly from one week to the next, but the production remains mostly stable," stated Pablo Ribadeneira, of Agroeden.
Ecuador is growing at a slow, but safe pace in the field of pineapple cultivation, supported by the rising demand recorded in recent years. "The demand is growing mainly because Costa Rica, despite having greater volumes, has severe difficulties due to the natural flowering. We, as a country, can guarantee the supply of a high quality production every week; something that is very appreciated by importers," pointed out the representative.
Despite the cost of freight, Ecuadorian pineapples are gradually entering more international markets. "In the last few years, the demand from Europe has grown a lot. We used to ship almost our entire production to the Southern Cone and the United States," concluded the spokesperson.
