Grape varieties with the greatest potential in Chile

In the following video, Victor Giancaspero, a table grapes international consultant and member of Uvanova, speaks about the varieties that generate the highest production expectations in Chile, based on the country's situation.

Giancaspero made this presentation in Uvanova's first seminar: Modern table grape plantation.

"The decision to opt for new varieties wasn't taken only because of what happens in the fields; it also took into account what happens in competing countries and in the markets to which we deliver our fruit," he said.

The new varieties, he added, must be friendly to the producer, resistant to diseases and insects, have a high fertility, a low intensity of labor, a long enough post-harvest life, be adaptable to different ecosystems, and they must have an attractive and simple business model.

However, Giancaspero said producers were buying varieties at "an amazing speed [but] without the necessary support, and so we are already seeing errors and people are uprooting them." As a result, the expert opted to give this presentation and speak about the plantations that are being made and the expectations that people have of them, while taking into account that much research was still needed to have more certainty. "We're all responsible for development," he stated.

"Analyzing and figuring out which are the best new varieties will take a while, so the current varieties will continue having an important role," he said.
