The Fengjie Navel Orange Production Association

China: Online sales help Fengjie navel oranges

"The production season of navel oranges starts in the period of November and December every year and ends around April. In comparison to the last years, the navel orange production volume of the self-owned enterprise has visibly increased. This is mainly the result of a bustling activity on the online sales platform," says Mr. Huang Mingdi from the Fengjie Navel Orange Production Association.

Diversification increases market competitiveness
"As everyone knows, the famous Chinese brand of Fengjie navel oranges are very well-balanced in terms of sweetness and acidity. They are very tender. The variety that is cultivated in the original Fengjie cultivation base can't be cultivated elsewhere successfully. That gives it the natural property of being unique, which makes navel oranges a strong competitor on the market."

"The cultivation surface of Fengjie navel oranges has already reached 20,000 hectares with a yearly production volume of about 210,000 tons. The cultivation of the navel oranges has substantially spurred on the local industry development. Currently, there are no less than 300,000 farmers who engage in the cultivation of navel oranges."

Online assistance
"As Fengjie navel oranges have a consistently high popularity on the market, sales are never a problem. The farmers generally don't have to search for customers themselves. In the past years, city residents usually came over to pick their oranges before the market buyers came to purchase. In the last two years, the support of an online sales platform has gradually turned the internet into the main sales channel of the Fengjie navel oranges."

The early-ripe varieties of the Fengjie oranges are cultivated in the regions with the lowest elevation. That is usually at 300 meters above sea level or lower. In total, there is only a 1000 hectares of low elevation cultivation surface, with a production volume of around 30,000 tons. When the first batch of the early-ripe navel oranges came on the market, they immediately became a best-seller, as in previous years. The price is currently at 12 RMB per kg."
