Michoacan, which produces 240,000 tons of plantain a year, is the 4th biggest producer of this product at the national level and exports a little more than 24,000 tons of plantain to the USA, Japan, UK and Europe.
Francisco Huergo Maurin, the Secretary of Rural and Agricultural Development (Sedrua), stated that Michoacan has about 5,000 hectares devoted to this production and that the municipalities that produce the most plantain in the state are: Coahuayana, Apatzingan, Tepalcatepec, Parácuaro, Lazaro Cardenas, and Buena Vista.
Expectations are that the state of Michoacan will have more than 5,000 hectares devoted to this crop in a few years.
Regarding the 2015 export campaign, Secretary Francisco Huergo Maurin said that, having shipped more than 24,000 tons to the US, UK, Europe, Canada, and Japan had helped further consolidate the plantain sector.
The President of the Plantain Product System, Rufino Valencia Magana, agreed with Secretary Francisco Huergo Maurin on the production and export volumes.
He said the increase in agricultural exports was due to the producers' commitment to produce higher quality products and to meet phytosanitary health and safety standards.
Regarding plant health, he said, producers are redoubling efforts in order to increase exports.
He said there were 400 producers in the state that created jobs promoting the development of the coastal region of Michoacan and Tierra Caliente, mainly.
