China: Bad market for off-season greenhouse cucumbers

The voice of the Chinese village has reported that, as winter comes, off-season fruits and vegetables will appear on the table and greenhouse cucumbers are no exception. Currently, the cucumbers on the market are mainly produced in large greenhouses in the North of China. But, because of the cold weather and fast-changing temperatures, the cucumbers in the Northern regions are growing less fast. Also the production volume has decreased with a strongly rising buying price as a result. This has happened to the point that the wholesale price for cucumbers has gone to 9 RMB to 10 RMB per kg. But this situation didn't last long. As the supply of cucumbers increased, high demand has turned into stagnated sales. At the present stage, the market quotations are going down again.

During the same period last year, there was a serious shortage of sunlight in Northern China. As a result, the cucumber price also rose gradually. It made a lot of farmers expand their cultivation. The impact of those decisions is being felt this year, when the cucumber price has dropped to half of last year's price. If there is no extraordinary weather in the last period, it is estimated that the price will stay lower than last year for this winter and next year's spring season.
