Italy: Low tomato demand

"The produce from Fondi is ending - up to a few weeks ago, tomatoes from the area arrived almost every day, while now we are down to a couple of times a week," explains a wholesaler from Bologna.

Prices are around €1.30-1.50-1.80/kg for Piccadilly, cherry and plum tomatoes respectively.

Production from Sicily became available a month ago. The price for cherry tomatoes is around €2/kg. But there is also foreign produce on the market, from Holland, Spain and Morocco. Spanish bunch tomatoes are sold at approximately €1.30/kg, while the same product from Morocco "is sold at 70-80 eurocents/kg. The problem though is that sales volumes are low for the period."
