A good year for Junami™ apples

Washington apple production is expected to amount to 137.4 million boxes this year, which will be close to the 2014 record crop. “The growing weather this year was one for the record books,” says Aaron DeHerrera with Rainier Fruit. “Fruit loved the warm days and cool nights. As a result, production quality as well as flavor are amazing this year.” In line with all apple varieties, it was a great season for the Junami™ apple as well.

Junami apples are a cross between Idared, Maigold and Elstar. Bred in Switzerland, the Junami™ apple is also cultivated in central Washington State. “We are the exclusive North American grower,” shared DeHerrera.

New pouch bag
“Junami™ opened up to the market at the beginning of November and with the demand we are seeing, we will be finishing up by mid to late December,” mentioned DeHerrera. The exclusive apple variety can be found at major retailers from the eastern part of the US to the western part. This year, Rainier Fruit introduced a new 2 lb. and 3 lb. pouch style bag for retailers who are looking to grow this segment of the category.
