Marianela Rodriguez, Fruit Producers Consortium SA:

Peru's avocado production could increase by 17%

"This year's Hass avocado campaign began earlier than expected in the south-central region of Peru, mainly because of weather conditions. By contrast, the campaign was slightly delayed in the north of the country. Projections are that production will increase by approximately 17% this year. The country is exporting most of its production to Europe because of its favorable market conditions and the low risk that this market poses for exporters. However, there has been an improvement in the American market In recent weeks, which is encouraging exporters to ship their fruit to this market so as to maintain a balance between markets," said Marianela Rodriguez.

The United States allowed the entry of Peruvian Hass avocado in 2011; a market opening that gave producers an alternative market where to sell their fruits. In 2015 Peru was able to implement a phytosanitary protocol with different Asian countries, such as Japan and China. Therefore, expectations are the Peruvian Hass avocado will be present in these markets in order to maintain a proper offer balance and price stability.

"The demand and overall consumption of Hass avocados is growing. We, as a producer country, must take advantage of this situation and continue positioning the Peruvian Hass avocado in different markets. Within a few weeks we will have the second round of the presidential election and we hope that the new government will further boost foreign trade and improve the infrastructure and roads so that we have a more efficient logistical process," concluded the representative of the Peruvian consortium .
