Since November, wholesale prices of Hainan areca nuts have dropped considerably. Prices of fresh nuts dropped from 16 Yuan per kilogram (€2.20) to 8 Yuan per kilogram.
Areca nuts are widely produced in Hainan and Hunan province. 2 million farmers are estimated to plant the nuts and the price drop will hit their families and livelihoods.
Prices have come down due to increased production that has taken place in the last two years and a particularly good harvest this year.
