Many shows in April and wild strawberries

The month we celebrated Easter, also brought many events like: PMA Fresh Connections, Freskon, CPMA and Medfel.

Transparency, consistency through entire chain is key
The 2nd annual PMA Fresh Connections Netherlands was held at the Rotterdam Hilton. The reason for the location, according to Bryan Silbermann, CEO of the Produce Marketing Association (PMA), was logical considering the importance of Rotterdam, The Netherlands and Europe as an important gateway to the global industry. The industry was well represented, with visitors representing all corners of the globe.

WhatsApp turns trading platform for Indian farmers
Rajkot-based agriculture entrepreneur Dinesh Tilva turned popular social media app WhatsApp into a classifieds marketplace that allows farmers to trade goods such as grains, vegetables, seeds, irrigation equipment and tractors, among others.



First edition of Freskon a success!
The first 'Freskon' International Exhibition of Fresh Fruit and Vegetables, held from 23 to 25 April at Thessaloniki International Exhibition Centre, exceeded all expectations. The goal of TIF-Helexpo to promote 'Freskon' as a point of reference for the sector in the broader region of South-East Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean was achieved. The total number of trade visitors that visited the event came to 4,155, of whom 600 were foreign, coming from over 36 countries around the world. In fact, they included the 120 hosted buyers invited by TIF-Helexpo. The number of exhibitors came to 200.

Tuesday 21st of April Medfel opened its doors. The show that is focussing on the Mediterranean, with mainly French exhibitors as it is held in Perpignan, shows a small growth every year in number of exhibitors.

New fears of Grexit after stalled negotiations
The threat of a Grexit was again in the air. Negotiations for a new aid package worth 7.2 billion Euro yielded no results, thus feeding the speculation machine. Jeroen Dijsselbloem, chairman of the Eurogroup, was not giving up and reiterated that a detailed list of reforms was needed before the funds could be made available.



European stonefruit forecast 2015

This season's peach forecast was released at EuroPeche at MedFel, France. On a European level, if compared to 2014, harvest forecasts indicated a stable 2015 harvest, with +1% in peaches, flat peaches and nectarines, reaching slightly less than 3 million tons and +2% in pavies with 770,000 tons.



CPMA largest to date
The Canadian Produce Marketing Association’s 90th Annual Convention & Trade Show in Montreal was a great success, with 3500 representatives from across the fresh fruit and vegetable supply chain in attendance. In addition to marking their milestone 90th anniversary, the CPMA also celebrated their largest Montreal show to date. The CPMA’s annual event ran from April 15-17, 2015 in Montréal, Québec at the Palais de congrès de Montréal. There were representatives from 19 different countries in attendance, demonstrating the international flavor of the industry.



Wild strawberries at Fruit World Breda
From now on, Fruit World not only has pineberries available, but wild strawberries as well. The season for these special strawberries runs until December.
