"Lettuce: "clearly we would like to have better prices"
The expert explains: "The prices' behavior is quite stable at the moment. But not much is happening either. Because the lettuce season is slowly coming to an end, the availability of other products is noticeably increasing, and the customers respond to the offers." Thus, customers show an increased interest in seasonal products, such as cabbage, for example. "We would clearly like to have better prices. But the market is currently not giving more," the trader admits.
Quantitatively, the inflows are moving at a stable level, says the wholesale trader. "The smaller quantities from Germany or other Central European countries are currently well caught by Spain. Larger amounts of iceberg lettuce are already coming in from over there."
The wholesale trader says, that in the coming weeks, the German lettuce will completely disappear from the market. "The demand for lettuce will rise once more towards the holidays," the importer explains. "We will also find many different Spanish offers on the market. Then we will see where the journey goes in terms of price." A precise prognosis is difficult to make at this point, says the expert.
