New Zealand fruit named after a bird

Ten times healthier, eat the kiwi

Many people believe that kiwis come from New Zealand, but they are actually originally from China. Long ago in China they called this fruit 'Yang Tao'. Originally all kiwis were green on the inside, but in recent years a new kiwi has entered the market, and this one is yellow inside. So why is this fruit so healthy?

Kiwis increase your resistance to sickness
Per 100 grams kiwis contain the full recommended daily amount (RDA) of vitamin C. One kiwi weighs 55 grams. Therefore if you eat 2 kiwis you have reached your RDA of vitamin C for the day. What's great is that this natural vitamin C contains excipients, which makes the vitamin C even more powerful. Moreover, vitamin C does not only increase your resistance to sickness, it also contributes to the formation of teeth, bones, blood vessels and skin.

Kiwis lower your blood pressure

Many people eat a lot of processed food, which contains a lot of salt (sodium chloride). Sodium increases your blood pressure. Kiwis contain a great deal of potassium, which is the counterpart to sodium. Therefore, kiwis contribute to maintaining the right blood pressure. Potassium is not the only anti-hypertensive mineral in kiwis, they also contain magnesium. Magnesium can dilate the arteries, which can also reduce blood pressure.

Kiwis are good for your eyes
Kiwis are full of lutein and zeaxanthin. These are carotene pigments. These substances act as antioxidants for the eyes, protecting the eyes against harmful influences like UV-radiation from the sun.

Kiwis fight ageing
We may not be able to reverse ageing, but we can slow it down. An important part of slowing down ageing is eating enough antioxidants. According to research, kiwis appear to have more antioxidant power than oranges.

Kiwis contribute to a good night's sleep
Kiwis contain a lot of serotonin, which many people do not know. Serotonin is the precursor of the sleep hormone melatonin. Research done in a sleep clinic has shown that kiwis can help you fall asleep quicker and stay asleep.

Kiwis reduce inflammation
There is a peptide in kiwis that can reduce inflammation. The name of this peptide is Kissper. Many people do not know about this peptide, but researchers have been able to show it's beneficial effects.

Kiwis improve digestion
The enzyme actinidain in kiwis helps in the digestion of proteins. Also, the fibers in kiwis feed the bacteria in the intestines. Prebiotics are nutrition for the intestines, so in a sense kiwis are a prebiotic.

Kiwis strengthen the cardiovascular system
Researchers agree that if you eat a kiwi every day it will have a positive effect on the lipid status in your blood. In other words, your cholesterol and triglyceride levels will improve. Researchers say that you will have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease if you eat a kiwi everyday.

Kiwis can prevent fungi
Kiwis contain thaumatin and actinchinine, which are substances that prevent fungi. In particular, the gold kiwi is full of actinchinine. Some people have fungi in their intestines and could therefore benefit from eating kiwis.

Kiwis improve breathing
Researchers have discovered that eating kiwis can reduce respiratory complaints. When combined with citrus fruits this effect is even stronger. The large amount of vitamin C is presumed to be responsible for this positive effect.

Facts about kiwi's:
