Citrus production in N.E. Tunisia lower than last year

The citrus harvest in the Nabeul Governorate (North East Tunisia) has begun and hopes for a good production are not high. The region’s 19,000 hectares of citrus production represents 75% of national citrus production. However, volume is expected to reach a record low of 284,000 tons, 11.7% less than the 322,000 tons harvested last year. A large decrease in Maltese oranges is expected (92,000 tons compared to 124,000 tons last year. The Head of Vegetable Production at the CRDA, Fayçal Loussif, says that the decrease was caused by the heatwave at the start of May that saw temperatures reach over 40 degrees.
