Adrie Kleinjan:

Potato yields improve

The quality of potatoes right now is good, says Adrie Kleinjan from Kleinjan's Aardappelhandel (Potato Business) in Goudswaard, The Netherlands, "In August we couldn't have dreamed that the quality and yield of the potatoes would reach this level. Up until mid-September things did not look good, but thankfully we've seen a turnaround."

Although the potatoes were harvested in wet conditions, the necessary effort was put in, which ensured that there were enough dry potatoes in the box for export. This has also resulted in a decrease in price, which was quite high a few weeks ago. We now have much more potatoes available to us than we had anticipated, and growth will continue in the neighboring countries as well. This may further impact the price," continues Adrie.

"Over the last few weeks we have shipped and sold a great deal of potatoes. There are enough potatoes this week as well, but the general feeling in the potato sector is that of disappointment. Currently, Africa and the Caribbean, in particular, are on the market, and many potatoes are going to Eastern Europe, but we are happy with what we have," concludes the potato trader.
