While the acreage in Germany for tomatoes increased by 22% every year since 1992, the Swiss growing area is consistent or slightly decreasing according to the Swiss Central Office for vegetable production (SZG) in Koppigen. “According to the figures of the SZG about 50,000 metric tons of tomatoes were produced in 2014.”
The extreme summer has left his traces on the Swiss produce. “The heat was especially tiring for the farm workers and therefore companies had to adjust to these conditions,” says Nuic.
“The increased sunlight caused an excellent supply for a short time because the tomatoes ripened faster,” explains the expert. “This caused, together with the heat, again a shortage in tomatoes. Vine tomatoes didn’t develop as expected.”
Currently the growing conditions have normalized again. “The crops have recovered from the extreme conditions and currently there are no negative effects any more,” states the representative of the VSGP.
