Mexico: Irapuato promoted as Strawberry Capital of the World

The third edition of the Festival of the Strawberry Capital of the World started in the City Hall, where, compared to last year, there was an increase in the amount of foreign visitors, particularly from Japan.

Mayor Sixto Zetina Soto was in charge of inaugurating the third edition of the festival, which due to its importance, is part of the activities of the Si Sabe food festival being held in the state of Guanajuato.

Eliane Hernandez Hinojosa, director of Economic Development of Irapuato, said they expected about 2,750 people would attend the festival and that it would have an economic impact of about $2 million pesos; Last year, the Festival had an economic impact of approximately $1,850,000 pesos.

Some of the Festival's attractions include twenty seven stands with different producers, artisans, liquor sales, creams from Xoconostle, special edition beer for the festival, fresh strawberries with cream, crystallized, with chilli and frozen, as well as animal exhibits from the Zoo.

The Festival is free, but the tasting of more than 70 dishes offered by nearly 50 chefs and cooks are priced at 100 pesos per person. Among the dishes being offered are chillies in walnut and strawberry sauce, octopus and shrimp ceviche with strawberries, vodka with strawberry and mint, strawberry gruel, Jamaican enchiladas peak strawberry, strawberry pie, strawberry cake, strawberry crepes and a variety of dishes prepared with the traditional strawberry from Irapuato.

The Festival will be open from 9 am to 6 pm.
