US (IL): Com-Pac to introduce gps tracker

As a manufacturer of resealable bags and the zippers for those bags, half of Com-Pac's business deals with the fresh produce industry. In the coming weeks, they'll introduce a gps device that can be used in conjunction with their bags to monitor and ensure optimal conditions as products are moved along the cold chain.

“We are introducing a unit that customers can put in shipping containers,” explained Greg Sprehe of Com-Pac International. “It's a mini-gps unit, about the size of a book of matches, that, once activated, can send temperature and location information every 15 minutes.” The customer can receive that information on their laptop or cell phone. The Speci-Tracker, which will be unveiled in a couple of weeks, will provide insight into the conditions that determine how fresh a product is on delivery.

Things like better tracking and more sophisticated plastics are things that are becoming more commonplace in fresh produce packaging. Those are innovations that Sprehe believes Com-Pac is ready to accommodate. About half of Com-Pac's product sales come from uniquely developed products for specific customer applications, so tailor-made items are an important aspect of Com-Pac.

“The future is in more automated packaging, more speed, and new breathable materials,” said Sprehe. “Along with bags, we sell the zippers that are tailored for different kinds of materials, including new breathable bags.”
