Prolong® packaging successfully extends tomato shelf life

Ser Pak is proud to announce the successful results of the Prolong® packaging available for tomatoes, after trials carried out at the beginning of the 2015 season, with tomatoes shipped in 5 kg and 6 kg cartons.

Prolong® has technology with Modified Atmosphere (MA) and high moisture vapour transmission rate (MVTR ). The MA slows down respiration, inhibits ethylene and decay and thereby maintains freshness during prolonged storage and transportation. For its part, a high MVTR eliminates excess condensation and reduces the risk of decay, while preventing excess dehydration, which makes it an asset to ensure the delivery of a successful product. Consumers are guaranteed a concentrated fruit aroma and juicy fruits when opening the pack. Furthermore, the high relative humidity within the Prolong® packaging environment also reduces weight loss.

Prolong® offers advantages over polyethylene based modified atmosphere, since film has a low moisture vapour transmission rate and excess moisture is likely to speed up decay and the development of mould, either during the storage/transportation period or after removal from the packaging.

When tomatoes are packed and stored and/or transported correctly in Prolong® packaging, the tomato stems remain green, fungal diseases are prevented, and the high moisture vapour transmission rates allow for shelf life to be extended for to up to 2 weeks.
