Mexican hass avocado production to increase

Mexican hass avocado production is expected to reach 1.50 million metric tons for the 2014-2015 season, according to a report from the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service. That's a slight increase over the previous season's production of 1.46 MMT, and the upswing in production is partly attributed to favorable weather in the Mexican state of Michoacan, where 85 percent of the nation's hass avocados are grown.
Plantings are also expected to increase over previous seasons, with this season's plantings forecast at just under 176,000 hectares. If that figure holds, it will be an increase of almost five percent over the previous season's plantings.
This season's exports are expected to reach 700,000 MT, with almost 80 percent of those going to the United States. If exports reach that figure, it would be an almost 10 percent increase over the Secretariat of Economy's estimate of 640,000 MT of exported avocados for the 2013-2014 season.
