Mayan Sweets test the UK market

Pacific Produce have received their first container of Mayan Sweets. These large sweet onions have been brought into the UK by the company as a trial to see how the British consumers take to them.

The farm in Peru where Pacific Produce sources the onions produces up to 50 containers per week for the US market where this onion variety has steadily increased market share to approx 50%. It is a premium product and costs up to 3 times the price of the regular brown onion.

"We believe that the American public are correct and that this variety has a place in the market. The flavour is superior and the pungency is lower so it can be used raw and there are fewer tears in the kitchen," explains Robert Cullum.

Kids also like them more and according to Cullum they are idea for burgers.

"The variety has been available in the UK for some time but generally only the very small ones which do not show off the potential of this product. We have packed them in the Mayan Sweets branded box which is very well know in the USA and will hopefully aid in placing the product above the standard onion."
