US (CA): Spinach prices steady

After a season in which the market for spinach out of California went up and down based on supplies out of the state's different districts, the market has currently settled on a steady price for spinach.

“Prices have sort of been up and down,” said Jeff Halfpenny of Talley Farms. “One district would do fine and then another would come in with big volume. I've seen differences in price of up to five dollars between districts.” But as of the end of last week, the price for a carton of bunched spinach was between $9.00 and $13.55.

“There were erratic supplies throughout the districts, and labor was also a tough issue for us,” said Halfpenny. “Some guys who had been with us for a long time moved on, so crews were light for us. Between erratic supplies, labor and getting new seed varieties, there were a lot of variables to deal with, and prices fluctuated a lot this year. But prices are holding pretty well right now.”
