Italy and Spain join forces

A company located in Vittoria (Sicily) has sown and transplanted Centonove F1 yellow peppers from Southern Seed Srl. As quality was really good, the seed company was contacted by Gaetano Cinturrino, sales operator for Mercabarna in Barcelona, who also wanted to try other Southern Seed varieties (Karlone F1, Casero F1, Frankone F1 e Mistralone F1) in another company in Almeria, Vargas y lopez s.l.

Gaetano Cinturrino and Oscar Pozo Pique.

"We started cultivating California peppers in Almeria and we realised that they were not very successful, so we opted for red Lamuyo and, since our Italian clients are becoming increasingly interested, we went for yellow Lamuyo too," explains Oscar Pozo Pique from Fruits Pique s.l, the distribution company who initiated the Spanish-Italian cooperation with Gaetano.

Vargas y lopes s.l. grows different varieties of peppers on 20 hectares (12 for red Lamuyo and 8 for yellow Lamuyo).

"Peppers are usually planted in early August and harvested from mid November to late May/early June. If the weather is too hot or too cold, ripening halts."

In total, the company produces 1,800-2,000 tons of peppers. "We are based in Barcelona because of its location, which makes it easier to reach the Spanish, French and Italian markets."
