German leek acreage up 10 percent

The past year, 61,500 tonnes of leek were sold in German stores, the German 'Bundesvereinigung der Erzeugerorganisationen Obst und Gemüse e.V.' (BVEO) reports. On average, every German household bought 1.5 kilogrammes of the stalk vegetable. The largest part of that, about 70 percent, originated from German cultivation - with an upward trend.

Since 2004, the leek acreage in Germany has grown by 10 percent. This year, the acreage was over 2,600 hectares. The most important state for German leek cultivation is Rhineland-Palatinate, with around a third of German leeks originating there. In addition, 26 percent of leeks come from North Rhine-Westphalia, and 14 percent from Lower Saxony, figures from the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) show.
