"Annick Smets: "Demand for shelf life extending packaging increases"

EuralPack updates flow-pack foil

For some time now, EuralPack has focused on the potato sector, and for a number of years on the fruit and vegetable sector too. The company mainly supplies vacuum packaging or fumigated packaging for freshly peeled potatoes, fries and other potato products. Recently they introduced a new product: an updated version of the flow-pack foil. Annick Smets says: "We have changed various things in the foil, like the opacity, so the product is more visible. Thanks to special alterations, the foil is more easily processed, stronger, and there is less failure during production. The foil is fully optimized, and it even seals better now."

Even longer shelf life
With the updated flow-pack foil, EuralPack wants to operate more in the fruit and vegetable sector. "We want to convince the sector that there is a lot of added value in supplying products with a longer shelf life. Flowpack is used a lot in the fruit and veg sector for freshly cut fruit or vegetables. We can make sure they are packaged under a controlled atmosphere (CAP) or modified atmosphere (MAP), like fumigated or vacuum packed. That way, the products get an even longer shelf life than normal." According to Annick, shelf life becomes more and more important for companies these days. "Demand for packaging that increases shelf life, will certainly be on the rise. This prevents food waste, which is definitely an issue nowadays."

Thermoforming foil
The thermoforming foil EuralPack offers, is mainly used to make bags for freshly cut fries or other potato products. "We recently changed the packaging somewhat, and treated it in such a way that the top and bottom have become 'smoother' and thinner, so they're more easily stacked. That way, the bags can 'slide' over each other more easily, without tearing." Annick says it's harder to sell when the potato sector isn't doing so well. "They're focused on cutting costs, and not as willing to spend money on packaging. For products with more value, like meat, that problem hardly exists. Of course the packaging isn't cheap, but the big advantage is that you have 0% failure." Over the years, many farmers have grown and started to peel as well. "This market is huge in Belgium, and it will remain this way", Annick expects. "Freshly cut fries are here to stay. A lot more products could be made from potatoes, so we see some opportunities there. For instance, the packaging can also be used for mash. It's not about frozen food, but the products need to be really fresh. Our packaging is best suited for that."

Interpom Primeurs
At the Interpom Primeurs (November 23-25), EuralPack staff will be present. This year, they don't have their own stand, but the company can be found at the De Bruyne NV Food Processing Equipment stand. The latest products can be admired there. Apart from these products. EuralPack has a wide range of various foils (standard - cooking - high barrier - printed foils...), trays with or without a lid and vacuum, shrinking and cooking bags.
