UK (Scotland): Sowing the seeds of Cuba trade

A new deal to export Scottish seed potatoes to Cuba has been welcomed by Scotland’s Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and Food Richard Lochhead.

The agreement was struck following a visit to Scotland from Cuban agricultural officials last week, and opens the door to exports beginning in the near future.

Mr Lochhead said, “I am delighted that another export market is being opened up for Scottish seed potatoes, which are renowned worldwide for their high quality and health and are worth an estimated £83 million to the Scottish economy.

“We already export around 78,000 tonnes of seed potatoes to countries across the world every year. The opportunity to export to Cuba comes shortly after the opening of the market in Vietnam to Scottish exporters, and illustrates the continued commitment of the Scottish Government and SASA to increase seed potato exports in both new and established markets.”
