Weaker Euro helps Italian apples abroad

"All markets are active at the moment and the fact that the Euro is weaker than the Dollar helps us outside the EU. The abundant apple production has led to a confused start with lower prices," explains Fabio Zanesco (in the photo), sales manager for VI.P, the Association of Val Venosta Cooperatives.

"50% of our total volume is usually exported, with slight variations depending on the harvesting of the different varieties. In the last few years, North Africa and the Middle East have developed quite an interest in high-quality produce. A better organisation enabled us to supply significant volumes every week throughout the year. The progressive increase of the middle class in many countries of the area the future is looking good, although competition is fierce."

The Russian ban
For V.I.P, the Russian market has never represented more than 2% of the total, but "the main problem is that it was the main market for many countries and companies, and they are still looking for alternatives. This excessive supply affects prices and has a negative effect on the markets."

"The half million tons of Polish apples that can no longer enter Russia is worrying, though many varieties such as Idared, Shampion or Gloster can be sold only to Eastern-European markets nearby."

According to the sales manager, the situation is different for Gala, Golden Delicious and Jonagold, as they entered the EU market with prices that could not even cover production costs. "Luckily we did not overproduce, so we could manage collection and storage better. We are now working to provide our partners with an acceptable remuneration at the end of the campaign."

Agreements with US and Canada
"We cannot think about the US and Canada as a short-term solution, as we are only shipping the first quantities there through the FROM consortium. We cannot think they can absorb enough volumes to change the situation for us."

"Of course they are very interesting in the medium-long term, especially for that part of the population with Italian origins or interested in Italian produce," concludes the sales manager.
